Meerkats Emerging

Day 2: Sandy here again(the non sailor). I’ve been told by Captain Jess(my daughter) that my blog entry lacked comedic value. NOTHING is funny about sea sickness, and as one of the afflicted, I know first hand.

Yesterday was bed rest day for a few who were still suffering. However more of the team were up and about, and seas were much calmer with light winds which meant we had to do some motoring.

Being surrounded by sea is a very new experience for me and I can’t wait to see land again. Although I am thoroughly enjoying the sailing, the team and camaraderie amongst everyone.

Lesson #1 for the day. DO NOT lean on the bathroom door if it is closed. Thankfully I did not fly head first in to the toilet(yuck), but was saved John who had been taking a shower.

We are relying on farmer Will’s prowess as a fisherman to add something different to our diet. Not happening yet!!….Maybe tomorrow.

Get back behind that fishing rod Will!

The day was a lot of human ‘meerkats’ popping their heads out to admire the view, get some fresh air to then disappear again. Everyone has had a go at helming(even me!), which has been great.

We also have a few budding chefs onboard, and full credit to Steve and Will who have claimed the kitchen. I really think nobody wants to eat anything I might cook(Jess would agree).

What can I say, in my line of work as a teacher we normally ask parents to come to school and share what they in in their careers etc. So this is so cool that I can come and see what Jess does for a living(perfect role reversal).

Everyone is in pretty good spirits considering how sick they’ve been.

Day 3: After a night of motoring, today has been awesome sailing with a 12-15kt NW and a fairly calm sea state.

Most have had a ‘go’ at helming throughout the day. We are looking forward to rounding Cape Reinga early tomorrow morning.

We’ve had music playing all day in the cockpit which has boosted morale and let to some interesting dance moves(I won’t name names.)

With the Northerly set to supposedly smash us on the nose later tonight we’ve reefed the sailed and chucked the iron donkey on to keep us moving. Let’s hope we can keep our dinner down tonight.

Till next time,

Sandy :)

Trying my hardest to smile while concentrating
