Search for Sunnier Skies

Ahoy, fellow adventurers and sea lovers! Chief Mate Jess here, reporting live from the front lines of our oceanic escapades. If you're craving a dose of salty humor and tales of high-sea shenanigans, you're in for a treat. So batten down the hatches and join me on this wild ride!

Our noble steed Salt Lines

Let's set the scene: after what feels like an eternity of dodging rain clouds and battling mercurial weather, we're finally pointing our trusty vessel northward, chasing sunnier skies and (fingers crossed) more predictable conditions. Ah, sweet relief!

But before we could set sail into the great unknown, we faced a Herculean task of epic proportions – wrangling a mountain of provisions large enough to make even the heartiest of sailors weak in the knees. Picture this: boxes upon boxes of canned goods, bags of rice, and enough snacks to rival a pirate's plunder. And who was tasked with the monumental job of stowing it all away? Yours truly, along with my trusty shipmates Sharon and her Mum Pauline.

Now, let me tell you about Pauline – a true hero of the high seas. When those provisions arrived earlier than expected (a rare occurrence in the world of sailing), she swooped in like a seasoned sports Mum and helped us tackle the mountain of supplies with the grace and precision of a pro. Pauline, if you're reading this, you're an absolute legend – we owe you big time!

where are we going to put it all?

of course it was raining…..

The star of the show Pauline!

Moooooore food!

Five hours of Tetris-like maneuvering later, we had managed to cram every nook and cranny of the boat with enough food to last us through five voyages around the Pacific Islands. Victory was ours! And just in the nick of time, too, as our motley crew of seven descended upon the scene, eager to embark on our grand voyage from Opua to Tonga, with pit stops at the Kermadecs and Minerva Reef along the way.

Now, I won't sugarcoat it – our journey got off to a bit of a rocky start. With a 20-30 knot southeasterly predicted, we thought we were in for a speedy trip. But Mother Nature had other plans in store for us, throwing massive rainy squalls and gusts of up to 36 knots our way. Talk about a baptism of fire for our crew!

Repeat offender Baz back for more!

But fear not, dear readers, for we rose to the challenge with all the gusto of a crew ready to conquer the seven seas. Despite a few pesky wind shifts and some stubborn reefing points, we powered through the night with two reefs in the mizzen, three in the main, and the staysail catching every breath of wind.

And today, as the sun graces us with its golden glow and the sea begins to calm, we find ourselves drying our gear in the warm embrace of its rays, knowing full well that more rain swells await us tonight. But hey, that's all part of the adventure, isn't it?

So, whether you're a seasoned sailor or a landlubber dreaming of life on the high seas, I invite you to follow our journey, share in our triumphs and tribulations, and who knows – perhaps you'll find yourself joining us on our next grand expedition. Until then, fair winds and following seas, my friends!
