Whangaroa and The Dukes Nose
Swimming, SUP’ing and diving practice kicked off the day and even Ross went for a dip, latterly not his normal habitat so good to see him back in the water. If anyone had remained in bed, Juliet ensured they wouldn’t be for long, the smoke alarm was set off by crispy bacon which joined pancakes, maple syrup, bananas and fresh peaches, another great breakfast!
The weather outside of the harbour is not the best, with the coastguard regularly broadcasting gale warnings, we are definitely in the right place. The harbour is huge and there is so much to see and explore. We took the dinghy and motored around to Lane Cove where we were able to pick up the trail to The Dukes Nose. Whilst only a 1k walk to the top, the 200m elevation ensured it was a good workout and the views from the top were spectacular. The steep track was well worn with natural steps created by tree roots crisscrossing the path. The last section of the walk was almost vertical and steel rods had been sunk into the rock face to make the summit more accessible. Pearl was able to overcome her vertigo and made it to the top. Coming down was probably a little more challenging than the ascent but all overcame their personal demons and made it down safely. The return to Te Kaihōpara in the dinghy was straight into the wind and with waves picking up even inside the harbour we hugged the shoreline trying to stay in the lee as much as possible. Back at the mothership we had lunch before the skipper and first mate took the dinghy into town to assess options for dinner and on shore exploring. The short chop in the harbour was okay with two in the dinghy but it was agreed that it wouldn’t be suitable for more so we would have to move Te Kaihōpara to the anchorage just of the marina. With the boat relocated we all went ashore to the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club Cafe and Bistro to sample the local cuisine. The fish was very good, but the winner of the night was the seafood chowder, truly excellent. After watching the sun set behind the volcanic skyline we headed out for a walk along the harbour’s edge. Another wonderful end to a great day.
