The Poor Knights Islands to the Bay of Islands
Last night was interrupted a couple of times with the anchor alarm advising that we had drifted more than 50 metres from our spot, not too surprising given that we were anchored in 30m of water and had our entire 100m of chain out, but better safe than sorry.
There were a few keen swimmers who went for a dip before breakfast and then we were off, heading to the Bay of Islands. The wind was enough to push us along at a comfortable 6 to 8 knots and everyone had a go on the helm. Wind was almost directly astern so to keep the wind in the sails we took a slight detour heading directly to shore before gybing and following the coast north west to Cape Brett.
Cruising along in light winds at around 6 knots Will threw out a line and within a minute or so had a yellow fin tuna biting. And then the struggle began. Mick joined the fray and taking it in turns the pair reeled in a 74 cm yellow fin tuna. Will’s expertise as a fish monger shone through and tuna steaks were swiftly cut along with more sashimi than we could handle.
We passed the famous Hole in the Rock and a couple of tripper boats that drive through the hole as part of their tour. With only 16 metres of clearance we wouldn’t fit but great to see nonetheless. We checked out a few anchorages and settled on an almost deserted spot just off Urupukapuka. Most of the crew swam, snorkels, kayaked or SUP’ed. The snorkelers (Sharky and Will) found an octopus and even though Sharky offered her hand as bait they couldn’t entice it to come out of its hole. Once ashore we beach combed and climbed the hill to enjoy the stunning views of the islands. About a kilometre away was a 55m super yacht and Keri and Averill set off in the Kayaks to see if they could get an invite on board. Whilst they were away chatting to the butler, the guests/owners were being ferried in their jet boat to the little beach right next to where we were anchored, sod’s Law of the sea! Finally, it was time for the dinner we were all so looking forward to. Helle and Will were duty chefs and the tuna steaks found their way to the BBQ prepared in three different ways along with sashimi and wasabi. What a feast accompanied by a delicious salad. Card games and frivolity followed with new nicknames emerging and friendships forged. Eventually bed beckoned and with no alarms going off we had a peaceful night.
