Smooth as Tassie Pinot

Crescent Bay

Welcome to Silver Fern’s tiny but capable crew (Jane, Sonia, Brett, Lizzy, John and Jason) set out from Hobart with enthusiasm for sailing and some rare Tassie light wind conditions. We enjoyed views of the Derwent River, followed by motoring out around the stunning dolomite cliffs of Cape Raoul. Whilst admiring the scenery, we “VMT”ed (vang, main sheet, topping lift),  for several hours, until we had it running as smooth as a Tassie Pinot!

Once we had conquered the mainhoist we moved onto rescuing “Bob”, our silly fender who fell overboard. Brave Jane was hoisted out on the genoa halyard, and she successfully and safely recuperated our fellow fender back onto the sturdy Silver Fern deck.

Next and first overnight stop was the beautiful Safety Cove, a stones throw from the infamous Port Arthur prison. Not long after mooring we tucked into dinner and tucked into bed. It was an amazing first day of learning and advancement of all our sailing skills; guided by the knowledgeable John and Jason. Thanks guys!

Safety Cove

Saturday began with a gentle start to the day, with again uncharacteristically light winds on the Tasman peninsula, we hoped across to the closest shoreline for a hike. We followed the rugged shoreline up to top of Mount Brown. From here, we were welcomed by spectacular views back towards Crescent Bay Beach. Our calves burned as we climbed the sand dunes a little while later as we walked Crescent Bay Beach up the northern end.

Once at the northern end we stopped for an iconic photo with Tasman Island in the background and a “top hat” crew, sitting on a log.

A top hat crew!

Once back on the boat we headed south around the cliffs of Tasman island itself witnessing the likes of dolphins and humpback whales! David Attenborough eat your heart out!

As the wind decided to be having a spring holiday, we motored up to Wine Glass Bay - roast in the oven.

Thanks, Lizzy
