Swim Call!

This morning we find ourselves 275 nautical miles from Wallis and 200 miles north of Fiji, Salt Lines is making steady progress towards our next destination: Vanuatu!

We’ve had consistently light winds, which means we’ve had to rely on the engine more than we would like. Nevertheless, the forecast promises an increase in the wind this afternoon, and we’re eagerly anticipating a bit more breeze on our backs.

Alison at the helm!

Life offshore has been delightfully simple and satisfying. With the sun beating down, the bunk rooms have been far too sweltering for any meaningful rest, so most of the crew hangs out on deck or in the saloon during the day. Shade under the sails has become the perfect spot for reading, listening to music, sharing stories, or just enjoying a well-deserved nap. Our fishing lines are out, but so far, we’ve had no luck in landing a big catch.

On rainbow watch

Yesterday, after a particularly grueling session in the engine room bilge, Skipper John decided it was high time for a swim call! We dropped the sails and took turns jumping into the warm, sapphire-blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, with depths reaching over 8000 feet beneath us. Simon even broke out the laundry detergent and we all had salty showers and did a bit of washing.

Mid passage swim

Despite the idyllic conditions we’re experiencing now, the crew hasn’t forgotten the challenges we faced on our way to Wallis. When asked about their favorite part of this leg of the journey, there was a unanimous answer: not being seasick! The difference between the rough seas of our previous leg and the calm waters we have now has been night and day, and it’s clear that everyone’s spirits have lifted as a result.

As we sail towards Vanuatu, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for some good wind and perhaps a bit of luck with our fishing endeavors. After all, what more could a sailor ask for than fresh sashimi and breaking out the spinnaker!

Cheers! -Liv
