Montebello Islands

Hello! Jess here, I’ve been a little remiss in my blog writing duties which will be explained in my next entry! So…….where was I?

After some helpful advice from a local in Broome, we decided to miss our next stop to the Rowley Shoals and carry on to the Montebello Islands. The local assured us that with our limitations of inflatable dinghies and lack of dive gear we would see a lot more sea life and scenery at the Montebello Islands instead of making the 200M detour out to the Rowley Shoals. Off to the islands we headed! Unfortunately the pattern of no wind would continue and we carried on motoring for the next 4 days to reach our new destination.

Sunset approaching the islands

The Montebello Islands are a group of more than 100 Islands off the north-west coast of Western Australia. They achieved international notoriety in 1952 when the British, in an operation code named Hurricane, detonated an atomic weapon in a bay off one of the major Islands Trimouille. Two further atomic tests were carried out in May and June of 1956 on Alpha and Trimouille Islands.

With a warning of an elevated level of radiation on these islands, it was suggested that we spend no more than an hour on land. With over 100 other islands to choose from we decided to avoid them altogether as we were spoilt for choice.

Beautiful clear water

We had a lovely day recharging our batteries, swimming, snorkelling and lapping up the sun. The islands were very unique and beautiful with their baron limestone cliffs and golden sand beaches.

Heading off into the big wide world……they grow up so fast

While I was ‘busy’ ferrying people across to the beach for the day, Matt did the unglamorous job of unblocking our troublesome head. As we went round the group for a debrief talking about the most positive things that had happened for us that day, with so many obvious things that had been good that day I knew there was something that stood above all others………..I flushed the toilet!

It’s the small things right?

Till next time,

Jess :)
