Exploring Blumine Island
I was awoken at sparrows fart this morning by what sounded like a herd of elephants stomping around on the deck. As I came to my senses I remembered I was on the boat and realised my new crew had maybe not quite understood the meaning of ‘sleeping in’.
Sharon and some of the crew started off the day with a winch servicing lesson while I caffeinated myself up to the eyeballs and pretended to do some work down below.
We then motored over to Blumine Island and exiled our crew to shore for waking me up so early. During World War II, a number of large gun emplacements were built in the Marlborough Sounds as protection for a(never used) secure anchorage for the US Navy in Queen Charlotte Sound. Two of the emplacements were built on Blumine Island, and parts of them can still be seen today. My exiled crew emerged from the bush 3hrs later and with a change of heart I decided to let them back on the boat.
Keen fisherman Les, caught a few sizeable blue cod and unfortunately had a few(including his new hook and sinkers) snapped away by some pesky barracudas. Some people decided to go swimming at the same time in the balmy 18.3 degree water and possibly also scared any remaining fish away(no offence guys).
While everyone was away we had a staff meeting to see if the weather had changed. Spoiler alert…….it hasn’t. So we’ll stay here for now and continue to cruise around the sounds.
I’ll be dreaming up some jobs tonight for anyone that wakes me up early by basically clomping on top of the little cubby hole where I sleep.
Night everyone!
Till next time :)
